An abstract artist with Down’s syndrome is hoping to win an art competition run by former Dragon’s Den star, entrepreneur and multi-millionaire Theo Paphitis – but needs assistance from the public to enable her to achieve that goal!
Fiona Stevenson, who has exhibited her work in New York, London and Manchester, is aiming to raise her profile globally – and she hopes sheer weight of numbers will help her on her way to achieving that dream!
Members of the public have until August 19 to help her.
She’s calling on as many people as possible to vote for the dazzling piece she submitted to the Theo Paphitis Art Prize run by one of his many businesses, the London Graphic Centre, to enable her to become better known among the wider art community and encourage more galleries to offer her exhibition space.
Her competition entry “Joy” is competing against more than 700 other works – so the competition is fierce. The winner is chosen simply on the number of votes cast – so Fiona hopes many hundreds will choose her work above those of her fellow artists!
She explains the work sums up the burst of happiness she felt when the sun came out after all the recent rain.
“The bright yellow is self-explanatory and the red, blue and green are the plants bursting out of the ground to welcome the summer. I painted it quickly to show the energy both in the flowers and in my heart,” she said.
As well as giving Fiona another platform, winning the Peoples’ Choice Award will see her £2,000 better off, with the added bonus of an additional £750 of art materials which will be put to good use as she is a prolific painter in oils and acrylics, predominantly on large canvases.
Theo Paphitis said: “Art and all things creative have been a force for good and we want to recognise that, and most importantly put our money where our mouth is with cash prizes.”
